The Honorable Bernard "Bernie" Sanders
U. S. Senator
Vermont
confirmed

Democratic presidential candidate and US Senator Bernie Sanders is serving his second term in the Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Throughout his political career—as a 4-term Mayor of Burlington, as Vermont’s Congressman for 16 years and as US Senator for 8 years— Sanders has always been a fighter for social justice, often described as the conscience of Congress.

Sanders has worked tirelessly in his 24-year tenure in Congress on issues that affect the needs of working families, the middle class, the elderly, children and the poor.  Senator Sanders played a key role in making sure the Affordable Care Act substantially improves primary health care in the US through a major expansion of federally qualified health centers.

Other highlights from his legislative record include: voting against a 1998 bill which would have ended programs which ensure a mix of race, sex, ethnicity, color or national origin in higher education; co-sponsoring an amendment recognizing Juneteenth as the historical end of slavery; and receiving a 97 percent approval rating from the NAACP.

As an activist and student a the University of Chicago, Sanders marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963 and was arrested in support of civil rights.
